‘I don’t think it was a key moment’ – Postecoglou reacts to Aston Villa red card

John McGinn was sent off during Aston Villa’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur this afternoon, but Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has told the press that the fact his opponents went down to ten men did not affect the outcome of the game as his team had already got control of the match.

Tottenham stunned Aston Villa today with a dominant performance to take all three points in a huge 4-0 win at Villa Park. The result takes Spurs to within two points of today’s opponents, with a game in hand in the race for the top four.

An evenly-matched first half made way for a second half that could not have gone better from a Spurs perspective. Goals from James Maddison and Brennan Johnson, in the 50th and 53rd minutes, gave the Lilywhites the advantage.

Then, in the 65th minute, Villa midfielder John McGinn was shown a straight red card for a cynical foul on Destiny Udogie.

Spurs completed the rout in injury time, with goals from Heung-min Son and Timo Werner.

John McGinn’s red card didn’t change the game

When asked whether that red card changed the game in Tottenham’s favour, Ange Postecoglou insisted the dismissal was not a ‘key moment’ in the match and that his team already had a stranglehold on the situation.

He said (via Football.London): “I don’t think it was a key moment. We were in control. Obviously, it made it easier but it was just a by-product of the pressure we were putting on them. I don’t think it was a malicious one from John.”

Any team going down to ten men is going to make it a different scenario for both sides, but I do agree with Ange that we already seemed to have this one wrapped up by that point anyway. We were so dominant in the early stages of the second half that Villa just didn’t know what to do.
