AUSTIN (KXAN) — Freedom Forum's 1A House was at South by Southwest (SXSW) Saturday. The event was to celebrate the role that free expression plays at the conference and festival.
Freedom Forum, a nonprofit dedicated to First Amendment education, hosted Austin-based drag queen Brigitte Bandit at the event to talk about drag and the First Amendment.
During the regular legislative session in 2023, Bandit took several trips to the statehouse to testify against several bills, including ones aimed at limiting who could see drag performances and creating consequences for public libraries that host drag story time events for children.
KXAN’s Will Dupree was a moderator at the event and asked Bandit what she wanted to see in the future.
“For my future is just focused on that, continuing to fight for my community, and fight for each other as well, not only the LGBTQ community but anybody who is facing these kinds of attacks and this oppression,” Bandit said.
1A House runs through Sunday at Cafe Blue in downtown Austin.
