Chelsea under threat of FFP punishment after latest news, London club believe they have obeyed rules

Chelsea’s ability to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules is in fresh doubt after it emerged that the London club made a pre-tax loss of £90.1m in the year to 30 June 2023.

This set of rules has been clamped down on by England’s top flight over recent months with Everton (charged twice) and Nottingham Forest being charged for breaching the regulations.

The Toffees were handed a 10-point deduction for breaching the rules the first time around before it was reduced to six following an appeal, as reported by Sky Sports.

These rules are in place to make sure every Premier League club remains in a healthy financial situation, while also stopping the bigger teams from spending freely.

However, Chelsea could be the next club to be charged after the West London club reported a loss for the year 2023.

Chelsea’s loss leads to FFP doubts

According to The Guardian, Chelsea’s ability to comply with profit and sustainability rules is in fresh doubt after it emerged that the club made a pre-tax loss of £90.1m in the year to 30 June 2023.

The figures follow a loss of £121.4m in the previous year’s accounts and all this should have fans of the Blues concerned over falling foul of the Premier League’s PSR and Uefa’s financial fair play regulations as the English top-flight only permits clubs to make a loss of £105m over a three-year period.

Chelsea are adamant that they have operated within the rules and have said about their situation: “Despite the loss in the year and the continued fallout from the sanctions placed on the club in the prior year, the club continues to comply with Uefa and Premier League financial regulations.”

The London club were unable to sign players during the January transfer window due to concerns regarding FFP and will now have to sell before they buy for the summer window.

Players such as Armando Broja, Trevoh Chalobah, Conor Gallagher, Marc Cucurella and Ian Maatsen could be sold ahead of the new campaign and the money raised will allow Mauricio Pochettino to add new stars to his squad.
