Ex-Trump lawyer's 'fog of deceit' exposed by newly discovered texts: expert

The discovery of new text messages from Kenneth Chesebro, Donald Trump's former lawyer, shows the full extent to which the former president's legal strategists were trying to create a "fog of deceit" around the 2020 election results, former Manhattan prosecutor James Saland told CNN's Kate Bolduan on Tuesday.

Chesebro's texts, which were reported Monday, reveal the extent to which he fanned the flames of insurrection and then tried to paper them over when things turned violent.

And they may ultimately have implications for the election interference trial in Georgia that involves Trump.

Chesebro was a co-defendant alongside Trump, but pleaded guilty under a deal that involves him giving evidence to prosecutors. It's unknown if the newly revealed texts will affect that deal.

"You point to one of these messages that Chesebro sent to [fellow attorney Jim] Troupis ... in November of 2020," said Bolduan, reading the text: "At minimum, with such a cloud of confusion, no votes from WI (and perhaps also MI and PA), should be counted perhaps enough to throw the election to the House."

"Why does this one stand out to you?" she asked.

"Because he uses a term, that cloud of confusion. It's more like a fog of deceit," said Saland.

"He has this real intention of saying, we're going to throw a wrench, and not sort of, we in fact are going to try to throw a wrench into the system. We, in fact, are going to try to make this confusion so we can seize control and overturn that election."

And ultimately, he said, Chesebro wanted to do this "not because it's based on the merits, because it's based on what we want to do."
