The Mets’ farm system is deeper and more talented heading into 2024 thanks to last summer’s trades of Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and others, according to MLB Pipeline, which released annual rankings today.
Shortstop/outfielder Jett Williams was tabbed the top Mets prospect by MLB Pipeline, which ranked the top 30 for each team. The Mets drafted Williams in the first round in 2022 (14th overall). The 20-year-old was followed in the rankings by OF Drew Gilbert, SS/2B Luisangel Acuña, OF/1B Ryan Clifford and RHP Christian Scott.
New York acquired Gilbert and Clifford in the Verlander deal, and Acuña was brought in for Scherzer. The Mets also received infielder Marco Vargas (ranked No. 8) in the David Robertson trade with Miami and 17-year-old SS Jeremy Rodriguez (No. 12) from Arizona for Tommy Pham.
The prospects range in age from 17 to 25. Pipeline has nine of the 30 with a major league ETA of this season, including Gilbert, Acuña and Scott.
Here is the full list:
Scott made the biggest jump from last year, moving from unranked to fifth. “Scott has benefitted from a move toward throwing mid-90s four-seamers instead of two-seamers, and his control took off in 2023 with a 3.6 percent walk rate that ranked fourth among minor leaguers with at least 80 innings,” Pipeline’s Sam Dykstra wrote.
Pipeline also listed the prospects with the best tools. Players are graded on a 20-80 scale.
