Journalist says Spurs could pounce if Chelsea and Arsenal fail to sign 27-year-old

Journalist Dean Jones has said that while Tottenham Hotspur are one of Ivan Toney’s admirers, it is Arsenal who are at the front of the queue to secure the Brentford star, according to his sources.

With Toney set to enter the final year of his contract with Brentford this June, the 27-year-old looks set to be one of the most hotly contested players of the January window.

Tottenham have repeatedly been named as one of the contenders for the centre-forward, with HITC revealing a couple of weeks ago that Ange Postecoglou’s men are prepared to go toe-to-toe with the likes of Arsenal, Man Utd and Chelsea for the player’s signature.

While some sources over recent weeks have claimed that Arsenal are the favourites to land the England international (CaughtOffside), others such as David Ornstein have suggested that the Gunners are not guaranteed to pursue the 27-year-old and are also looking at other options (The Athletic).

Tottenham remain in the background of Ivan Toney race

However, Jones has now said that Mikel Arteta’s men will vie for Toney’s signature if the striker is available for less than £60m but explained that others, including Spurs, also remain quite keen on the player.

The journalist wrote in his column for GiveMeSport: “The leaks out of Arsenal around their interest in Toney have been pretty non-existent but other sources around a potential deal say there is genuine interest from the Gunners that should be taken seriously.

“At this stage, our information suggests they lead the race to sign him and are hopeful his value can fall somewhere below £60million.

“Chelsea retain an interest in him and Manchester United and Spurs also admire the player, and both could move if deals to the Emirates or Stamford Bridge fail to materialise. Toney is ready to make this move and will play his last game for Brentford against Newcastle on May 19.”

Spurs Web Opinion

While Tottenham do have the financial power to get involved in the bidding war for Toney, one would think that Arsenal would be the more attractive destination for the striker at this stage. Spurs have to qualify for the Champions League to have any chance of securing the Bees star.
