Former goalkeeper reveals how he used iPod to help beat Tottenham 

Ben Foster has revealed that he used the help of an iPod to understand where each of the Tottenham players were going to put their penalties in the shootout for the 2009 League Cup final while in goal for Manchester United.

Tottenham were the defending Champions of the tournament, having won it the previous year by overcoming Arsenal in the semi-finals and Chelsea in the final.

While Man United were favourite going into the final, Harry Redknapp’s men delivered a defensively disciplined display to hold them to a 0-0 draw until the end of extra-time.

However, the Red Devils ended up 4-1 winners on penalties, with Foster in the United goal pulling off a couple of excellent stops during the shootout.

The 40-year-old has now revealed that his goalkeeping coach had an iPod with videos of all the Tottenham players taking penalties and was telling him which way to go when each of the Spurs players stepped up.

He said on his Fozcast: “So basically yeah, Steely the goalkeeper coach he basically had them all on the iPod and he was showing me which way they all go.

“So the first penalty I saved was Jamie O’Hara, the Jamie O’Hara clips were telling me he was going to put it to my left, so I make the save. Boom.

“Then I think it was David Bentley, and he put it wide but our lads were brilliant like we were ruthless. We had Anderson, Ryan Giggs, Carlos Tevez just dispatching penalties, Heurelho Gomes in goal for Spurs didn’t stand a chance.”

As the likes of Harry Kane have shown time and again, even if you know which way a player is going, it is still difficult to save a penalty that is struck with power and directed into the corner.

However, I starkly remember during that penalty shootout that the body language of the Tottenham players was quite poor when they walked up to take the penalty.

They already looked defeated before they took their spot kick while the Man Utd stars looked a lot more confident, which is not surprising given that they had bene in those situations before, having won the Champions League final on penalties less than a year earlier.
