A MAJOR car brand is reportedly set to produce a £20,000 EV set to debut in the UK in the next two years.
The new motor would be one of the cheapest all-electric options on the market.
MG has, according to Autocar, indicated that it is planning to launch its latest city car as part of a move to expand the lower end of its EV lineup.
Speaking at the Geneva Motor Show, the company’s strategic planning boss David Allison said: “I think that it’s an area that no one has really exploited successfully yet, because the focus has been very much on larger cars and really where they can charge the amount of money for people that are willing to pay it.
“But I think there’s a huge opportunity for someone who can get to the four-metre EV for around £17,000.
” I think someone can do that with an acceptable range, decent-sized car about that price, and I think that person will clean up with it. And why not us?”
Should that target be met, it would make the new model the cheapest EV currently available in the UK.
However, it will face competition from the newly unveiled Dacia Spring, which is set to arrive in the UK this year priced at that £17,000 mark.
The report suggests the new MG would clock in just above that threshold, but still sit comfortably below £20,000.
It could also take on the name “MG 2”, as it slots in below the brand’s £25,000 4 model.
David added: “Product development is clearly a long-term thing, but it’s not inconceivable that you could go from concept to production in as little as two years.
“It would be great if we could get something like that in the market by the end of next year.
“We need to start giving people more accessible cars at the price they feel comfortable affording, and that’s what this industry is really, really good at.”
The potential car would be built in China through MG’s parent company, SAIC, but from a custom design aimed at appealing to the European market.
