Residence Z is a minimalist home located in Antwerp, Belgium, designed by Jessy Van Gorp. The architectural design ensures that each window frames views of the surrounding foliage or manicured lawns, fostering a seamless connection with nature. Tailored to the unique requirements of its occupants, the design process melds client desires with spatial potential and natural light to forge a cohesive and tranquil living environment. The guiding principles for this project were to create spaces that felt light, airy, and understatedly elegant, emphasizing tranquility, warmth, and a serene atmosphere conducive to unwinding after a busy day. The residence features a series of interconnected spaces, each distinguished by its own character yet unified in design.
The palette transitions from the off-white hues of the kitchen to the subtle ‘pinkish terracotta’ of the dining room table, and onto the beige and black/brown tones of the seating area, which effortlessly opens up to a cozy TV corner. This layout not only facilitates fluid movement throughout the home but also allows for varying degrees of privacy and connection among its inhabitants. Natural light plays a pivotal role in the home’s interior, with expansive glass sections welcoming sunlight to highlight the architectural contours and create dynamic visual effects. A notable feature is the large sliding door in the dining room, which can either shield the home office for privacy or reveal the lush outdoor scenery. The master bathroom, equipped with a sauna and a massage shower, benefits from carefully positioned lighting that accentuates its sleek design.
A commitment to simplicity and the use of natural materials are hallmarks of this home’s design philosophy. The ground floor showcases natural stone with a textured finish, while the bathrooms feature marble with bold patterns, all laid in an organic arrangement. The selection of wood varies from light to dark hues of brushed oak, and finishes such as natural lime plasters and textiles made from linen, wool, and cotton underscore the designer’s preference for natural elements. This preference is reflected in the home’s color scheme, which employs a soothing array of whites, beiges, and dark browns, punctuated by the striking ‘pinkish terracotta’.
