BCCI’s has been constantly taking an initiative to ensure the participation of all centrally contracted players in domestic matches, Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma had a direct message for young players who may lack the desire to play Test cricket. Recently, there has been significant discussion surrounding Ishan Kishan’s absence from Ranji Trophy matches despite directives from the board, and Shreyas Iyer’s decision to opt out of a Mumbai match despite being reportedly injury-free according to the National Cricket Academy. When questioned about the commitment of young players to Test cricket following India’s victory over England in Ranchi, Rohit Sharma offered a straightforward perspective.
“Jin logon ko bhookh hai, hum unhi logon ko mauka denge (We will give opportunities to only those who are hungry),” Rohit declared, making it clear that the team management is not willing to entertain players who do not display a burning desire to perform.
“Agar hunger nahi hai to unko khila ke koi matlab nahi hai (There’s point in playing those who don’t have the hunger),” he said.
His remarks followed closely after the BCCI directive urging players such as Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer to participate in Ranji Trophy matches, a directive that the pair chose to disregard
“I don’t see anyone in the team here who is not hungry. All the boys who are here and also those who are not, they all want to play. But the thing with Test cricket is that you get very few opportunities. If you don’t utilise them, they go away,” he asserted.
Captain Rohit Sharma stated that the “composed” group of new additions to the Indian team doesn’t require constant advice; rather, they thrive with a supportive atmosphere to showcase their talents. This remark came after the young talents played a significant role in India’s series-clinching victory over England in the fourth Test on Monday.
