PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Authorities have released more details about the arrest of an Astoria man who was captured Monday morning following an alleged multi-day crime spree around Oregon, Washington and Idaho.
The crime spree ended after an hours-long standoff in the Port of Kalama between suspect Jacob Dean Smart and local authorities. The Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office said that the 38-year-old barricaded himself inside an industrial plant on Hendrickson Drive while fleeing from Kalama Police officers. The plant was evacuated, and the Lower Columbia SWAT team and the Crisis Negotiation Team were called to the scene.
“CNT negotiators were able to reach Smart on his phone and attempted to convince him to surrender,” the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office said. “During calls with negotiators, Smart threatened to shoot officers and also threatened to shoot vehicles driving through the area. Smart made numerous threats and told negotiators he would not be taken alive.”
The Lower Columbia SWAT team sent a drone and a remote-controlled robot into the industrial plant and cornered Smart in the building’s office. The SWAT team used “chemical agents” and a K9 officer to bring the local man into custody. Smart was treated for minor injuries and booked into Cowlitz County Jail on outstanding warrants. CCSO detectives are expected to file additional charges against Smart for various crimes committed in Cowlitz County.
Smart was most recently wanted for a string of burglaries committed by a masked suspect in Cowlitz County. Smart was also wanted for kidnapping a homeowner and stealing a vehicle.
