Almost 50 years after the publication of James Clavell’s novel “Shōgun,” FX will premiere a new adaptation, a limited series of the same name that begins Feb. 27. The newly-released final trailer for the epic historical drama captures its vast, ambitious scope and centers on the character of Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), who declares that in seventeenth-century Japan, “Enemies are everywhere and friends nowhere.” Watch the final “Shōgun” trailer above.
Set against the backdrop of hundreds of years of Japanese civil war and the violent arrival of Christian faith in Japan, John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) lands on Japan’s shores and is partnered with Lady Mariko as his interpreter. As she explains to the Englishman, “Many years ago, a great injustice stole everything from me.” From there, the series promises “treachery, devotion, dishonor, suspicion, deception, fear, greed, power, deceit, desire, loyalty, victory, secrecy, passion, destiny” and much more.
The final trailer offers viewers an extended glimpse at the show’s gorgeous cinematography. The two-minute preview highlights epic battles, treacherous seas, political intrigue and assassinations as characters declare, “Death is the only punishment here” and “death can come for us at any moment.” Co-created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks, “Shōgun” debuts its first two episodes on Tuesday, Feb. 27 on FX and Hulu.
