Since the establishment of the supporting acting Oscar categories in 1937, a total of 121 films have been nominated for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress. The resulting average of 1.4 examples per year almost directly applies to the last decade alone, during which 13 female costar pairs or trios have covered both races. Check out our photo gallery of every case since 2015, including four that resulted in wins for one or more of the actresses involved.
The latest instance of this kind concerns 2024 lead nominee Annette Bening and her featured “Nyad” cast mate, Jodie Foster. As it happens, Bening was involved in a similar situation on her debut Oscars outing in 1991, when she and Anjelica Huston respectively received supporting and lead notices for “The Grifters.” The last film to win both female acting prizes was “Everything Everywhere All at Once” (2023), which stars Michelle Yeoh and features Jamie Lee Curtis.
Our narrowed list – which contains examples from all of the past 10 years except 2017 and 2021 – features four dual entrants, including three who remained in one category and one who shifted. Said singular case involved Margot Robbie (lead: “I, Tonya,” 2018; supporting: “Bombshell,” 2020), while those belonging to the former group are Laura Dern (supporting: “Wild,” 2015; “Marriage Story,” 2020), Saoirse Ronan (lead: “Lady Bird,” 2018; “Little Women,” 2020), and Olivia Colman (lead: “The Favourite,” 2019; “The Lost Daughter,” 2022).
