A hotel worker in Tenerife has been arrested after a diamond ring worth £14,000 was stolen from a British holidaymaker’s safe.
The tourist alerted the police after noticing the safe was open and the ring was missing.
It is unclear whether the vacationer had not locked the safe properly or it had been pried open.
The hotel worker handed the ring in and claimed she had come across it while cleaning.
The hotel where the theft happened has not been named but the holidaymaker reported the incident to police in the southern municipality of Granadilla de Abona.
A spokesman for the Civil Guard said: ‘The victim said she had left a 16,000 Euros (£14,000) ring inside a safe in her room and discovered the safe open and the ring was gone when she went to look for it.
‘Suspicions began to fall on a hotel worker once the investigation was underway who ended up handing in the ring and claiming she had found it on a cleaning trolley.’
‘She was arrested and accused of a crime of theft. She has been handed over to the courts for further questioning.’
