COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- A man fatally shot by a Columbus police officer while allegedly brandishing a knife has been identified.
The Franklin County Coroner's Office confirmed Monday morning that 26-year-old Colin Jennings died after being shot multiple times by police last week in east Columbus. Columbus police said they would give an update on the shooting at 1 p.m. Monday after canceling a Friday press briefing.
Columbus police declined to name officers involved in the shooting, citing victims' rights statute Marsy's Law, but said they have been with the force for 13 and 14 years, respectively. Police did not say which officer shot Jennings.
On Thursday morning, officers responded to the 500 block of North Nelson Road for a call of a man brandishing a knife, cutting himself, and fighting with another man.
Police said that when officers arrived, they immediately came into contact with Jennings, who then charged at the officers with a large knife, yelling at them to shoot him. When Jennings failed to listen to police commands, one of the officers fired their weapon, hitting the man.
Medics took Jennings to Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:05 a.m. No officers were injured in the incident.
The Ohio Attorney General's Bureau of Investigation was called to investigate the incident, which is standard procedure for any shootings involving police officers.
The news conference scheduled for last Friday was postponed because the man's next of kin had yet to view police body camera footage.
