Listed Townhouse
Listed Townhouse is a minimalist residence located in London, United Kingdom, designed by TYPE. The new design marries the historical elegance of Georgian architecture with the natural essence of Tiipoi’s product line, emphasizing craftsmanship, functionality, and a passion for cooking. This kitchen not only serves its practical purpose but also acts as a live-in gallery for Tiipoi’s cookware and objects, utilized daily. Originally, the kitchen’s layout—characterized by its dim lighting, cramped space, and challenging shape due to three doorways—posed significant limitations. The building’s listed status further restricted any alterations to the existing structure.
The innovative solution was the installation of a circular unit at the center of the space, transforming it into the kitchen’s focal point. This design facilitates movement around the room while incorporating the main work and storage areas. Complementing the central island, three additional elements enhance the room’s functionality: a shallow shelving unit for kitchen essentials positioned behind the cooking area, a set of deep drawers beneath a window for storing larger items and serving as an additional preparation space, and a stainless steel sink with a dishwashing station. The design features solid wood laminated panels for durability, with the circular unit showcasing Marmoleum surfaces for ease of maintenance and a granite countertop for resilience.
The auxiliary units retain a natural finish, adding a touch of simplicity. Rounded edges and clearly defined laminations ensure longevity, while the ergonomic design of the drawer pulls enhances user comfort. This kitchen represents a departure from the conventional rectangular and modular design, often at odds with the architectural character of older homes. By adopting a bespoke approach tailored to both the client’s needs and the unique context of a historic dwelling, this project explores innovative concepts in kitchen design, offering a fresh perspective on how these spaces can adapt and function within the constraints of heritage properties.
