Manchester United are pressing to sign Juventus centre-back Gleison Bremer during the next transfer window, according to Corriere dello Sport (page 13).
The Red Devils are likely to pursue a new central defender this summer with the contracts of Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans expiring at the end of June.
Bremer has been earmarked as their ideal target and Correire dello Sport claim that the Red Devils are ‘pressing’ to land his signature during the summer.
The 26-year-old only signed a new long-term contract in December last year, but the Bianconeri are open to accepting a ‘significant offer’ for their prized asset.
The Turin giants need to ‘consolidate their accounts’ particularly with a campaign away from Europe, and United are ‘seriously targeting’ a move for Bremer.
The Red Devils look likely to part ways with Varane this summer. They have no plans of triggering the extension clause in his current €397,000-a-week contract.
With Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS aiming to lower the huge wage bill, the World Cup winner could be on his way out unless he accepts a huge pay-cut on his wages.
Regardless of this, the club’s hierarchy could spend big on a marquee central defender, considering the injury woes in the department during the current campaign.
Bremer would be a quality acquisition for United. He is a good distributor with a pass success rate of 87 per cent this term. The 26-year-old has won 5.1 duels and managed 5.3 recoveries per league outing.
He has also excelled defensively with four clearances and 1.6 tackles on average. Aside from this, the Brazilian is a physically strong defender which seems the requirement of manager Erik ten Hag.
The Bianconeri could be persuaded to sell for a fee in excess of €60 million. This should not be a stumbling block for United, though they may want to negotiate a lesser fee up front.
