BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) -- Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill has appealed the decision by U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick to overturn Louisiana's voting maps for the Louisiana state Senate and House of Representatives.
The ruling by U.S. District Judge Shelly Dick was made on Feb. 8. In the ruling, the judge said that the maps "unlawfully dilute Black voting strength" in violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. She ordered the state to redistrict the voting maps but did not set a deadline.
Murrill submitted the appeal to redraw the maps on Tuesday.
This comes a month after a new U.S. congressional voting map was approved by the Louisiana Legislature on Jan. 19. The current Senate and House of Representative maps for Louisiana can be viewed below.
