BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — A Democrat state representative filed a bill during the 2024 special session that would penalize the Department of Public Safety and Corrections for holding inmates past their release date.
According to a bill written by State Rep. Edmond Jordan, D-Baton Rouge, the Department of Public Safety and Corrections would be required to pay fines if inmates are held past their scheduled release date.
Last year the United States Department of Justice believed the LDOC violated inmates' Fourteenth Amendment rights and held them past their release date. The DOJ reported that between January and April 2022, at least 27% of inmates were held past their release date.
Jordan's proposed bill states for every inmate held past release, the Department of Public Safety and Corrections would be fined $1,000 per day past the scheduled release date.
