Having trouble predicting what will win Best International Film at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their first round of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to “The Zone of Interest.” The other four Academy Award nominees are “Society of the Snow,” “The Teachers’ Lounge,” “Perfect Days” and “Io Capitano.”
As of this writing, a leading 18 out of our 19 Oscar Experts are predicting a victory for “The Zone of Interest”: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDb), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).
English auteur Jonathan Glazer wrote and directed “The Zone of Interest” which tells the story of a Nazi commander (Rudolf Höss) who is living the dream with his wife (Sandra Hüller) next door to the Auschwitz concentration camp during the Holocaust. Its five nominations are for picture, director, adapted screenplay, international feature film and sound.

The remaining Oscarologist, Eric Deggans (NPR), instead predicts a victory for “Society of the Snow.” Directed by J. A. Bayona, this survivor film from Netflix focuses on the real-life Uruguayan 1972 Andes flight disaster which was also adapted into Pablo Vierci‘s book of the same name and the 1993 film “Alive.”
Currently at Gold Derby, none of our Experts are predicting a win for the other three Best International Film nominees: “The Teachers’ Lounge,” “Perfect Days” and “Io Capitano.” However, many more awards pundits will soon be making or updating their own Oscar predictions, so that could change in the coming weeks.
