The Red Devils have made the 52-year-old their top target to be their next sporting director.
But the Magpies want compensation between £15-20m, according to ESPN.
This is reportedly unacceptable for United who are unwilling to break the bank for Ashworth.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe recently expressed his concerns over the English expert’s potential departure, insisting he wants a quick resolution to the situation.
A compromise is the most likely scenario
It is clear that Man United will not pay a huge compensation fee for Ashworth.
They are wary of excessive spending on recruitment as they don’t want to fall foul of Profit and Sustainability Rules.
United are very keen on Ashworth but they will not break the bank for him.
The 52-year-old is also very interested in joining the club, but Newcastle are playing hardball and have placed him on gardening leave.
United could cut it short by meeting Newcastle’s demands, but it is more likely that a compromise figure will be agreed.
