Changes to the African Cup of Nations for 2025 will see the tournament take place after the Premier League concludes, which is great news for Tottenham Hotspur and players like Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr.
The AFCON tournament normally takes place in the middle of the Premier League season, through January and February, leaving clubs without key players for a month.
It is something Tottenham had to deal with this term, as Yves Bissouma and Pape Sarr travelled to the Ivory Coast for this year’s tournament, to represent Mali and Senegal, respectively.
While Sarr saw his Senegal side crash out in the last-16 and was able to return at the start of February for the game against Everton, Bissouma and Mali went one stage further, and the midfielder was missing for a further week.
The likes of Mo Salah, Nicolas Jackson, and Mohamed Elneny were also absent for Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal, respectively.
However, the next edition of the competition will offer respite for Premier League clubs who don’t want to lose key players in the middle of the season, as it will take place during the summer.
As per Football.London, the decision to host AFCON 2025 in Morocco, in the North of the continent, means a cooler summer which will allow the tournament to take place in July and August.
Not only will this mean clubs won’t have to worry about losing their players mid-season, it can also provide a “boost” to clubs in the transfer market, with no fear of signing an African player who will go missing for a month further down the line.

This is great news for Spurs, who were probably hit the hardest by AFCON this year. To have both Sarr and Bissouma all season next year will be very important as they offer us so much in the middle of the park.
