Nikki Haley tried to juice up her longshot bid at winning the 2024 Republican presidential nomination on Tuesday by holding a press event where she took shots at her party for rushing to fall in line behind former President Donald Trump.
In her speech, she pointed to multiple recent special election results, as well as others dating back to 2018, to argue that Trump has long been an anchor around the GOP's neck.
What's more, she warned that Republicans' rush to rally behind Trump ignored what she said were his massive general election liabilities.
"The herd mentality is enormously strong," she said. "A lot of Republican politicians have surrendered to it. The pressure on them was way too much, they didn't want to be left out of the club. Of course, many of the same politicians who now publicly embrace Trump privately dread him. They know what a disaster he's been and will continue to be for our party, they're just too afraid to say it out loud. Well, I'm not afraid to say the hard truths out loud. I feel no need to kiss the ring, I have no fear of Trump's retribution."

After Trump won the electoral college in 2016 despite losing the popular vote to Democrat Hillary Clinton, the GOP has seen a string of defeats, starting with the midterm elections in 2018 where the GOP lost the House of Representatives, the 2020 elections where the GOP lost the White House and the Senate, and the 2022 midterm elections where the GOP won back control of the House with a razor-thin majority that saw the party massively underperform expectations.
Despite all this, Republican primary voters have shown no inclination to rethink their devotion to Trump, who has soundly beaten Haley so far in Iowa and New Hampshire.
