Having trouble predicting what will win Best Picture at the 2024 Academy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts! These savvy prognosticators from major media outlets have chimed in with their first round of predictions, and they say the trophy will go to “Oppenheimer.” However, one rogue awards pundit believes “Barbie” will instead claim victory. The other eight Academy Award nominees are “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction,” “The Zone of Interest,” “Maestro” and “Past Lives.”
As of this writing, a leading 21 out of our 22 Oscar Experts are predicting a victory for “Oppenheimer”: Andrea Mandell (People Magazine), Anne Thompson (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Claudia Puig (KPCC), Eric Deggans (NPR), Erik Davis (Fandango), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matt Neglia (Next Best Picture), Michael Musto (Queerty), Nikki Novak (Fandango), Perri Nemiroff (Collider), Peter Travers (ABC), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Susan King (Gold Derby), Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby), Tariq Khan (Gold Derby), Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby) and Wilson Morales (BlackFilmandTV).
Universal Pictures’ “Oppenheimer” stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, aka the father of the atomic bomb. It made a whopping $952 million worldwide, cementing its status as one of the most lucrative biopics in box office history. Producer/writer/director Christopher Nolan is responsible for three of the film’s leading 13 nominations, with the others being for actor, supporting actor (Robert Downey Jr.), supporting actress (Emily Blunt), cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup & hairstyling, production design, score and sound.

The remaining Oscarologist, Keith Simanton (IMDb), instead predicts a victory for “Barbie.” With $1.4 billion at the worldwide box office, Warner Bros’ fantastical take on the iconic Mattel doll is the most successful film ever to be directed by a woman, Greta Gerwig. Shockingly, Gerwig was snubbed for Best Director, as was the Best Actress contender, Margot Robbie. However, they are both still nominated for writing and producing, respectively. “Barbie’s” eight nominations are for picture, adapted screenplay, supporting actor (Ryan Gosling), supporting actress (America Ferrera), costume design, song (“I’m Just Ken”), song (“What Was I Made For”) and production design.
Currently at Gold Derby, none of our Experts are predicting a win for the other eight Best Picture nominees: “The Holdovers,” “Poor Things,” “Anatomy of a Fall,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “American Fiction,” “The Zone of Interest,” “Maestro” and “Past Lives.” However, many more awards pundits will soon be making or updating their own Oscar predictions, so that could change in the coming weeks.
