The City Council has set a hearing on whether to forgo a rent increase for the Sausalito Center for the Arts.
The center is in the former Bank of America building, which the city purchased in 2020. Under the lease with the city, the nonprofit’s monthly rent is due to rise from $4,029 to $11,095.25 in March, according to a staff report by City Manager Chris Zapata.
The nonprofit has asked the city to keep the rent as it is, noting that the organization has spent $125,000 on building improvements and attracted thousands of visitors to the city for events.
The council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at City Hall.
GREENBRAE
Gov. Gavin Newsom has appointed Pedro Galvao of Greenbrae to a position at the California Business, Consumer Services and Housing Agency.
The position is strategic initiatives and policy adviser. The mission of the 8,000-employee agency is “fostering an equitable and inclusive California” through licensing, regulation and other efforts, according to its website.
Since 2021, Galvao has been deputy director of legislation at the California Department of Housing and Community Development. He also has held positions at the Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern California and the Association of Bay Area Governments, according to the governor’s office. Galvano has a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University.
The annual salary for the position is $160,380. The appointment does not require Senate confirmation.

The Town Council has unanimously approved two residential project applications.
The owners of 18 Canyon Road asked the town to legalize a nonconforming hot tub that is 15 feet from the property line. The owners of 15 Skyland Way are planning to update landscaping, expand a driveway and install retaining walls, gates and fences.
The council held hearings on the applications at its meeting on Thursday.
