OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- Plans announced in May to revitalize Donald Gardner Stadium in Opelousas have hit a snag, according to Mayor Julius Alsandor.

In a letter to Opelousas Downtown Development District Board Chair Lena Charles, Alsandor said construction on the renovation of the stadium will be postponed until December 2024. Construction was slated to begin following the 2023 football season.

The stadium, located in Opelousas South City Park, was built in 1958. It serves as the home for the football teams of both Opelousas High School and Opelousas Catholic High School.

"By shifting the construction start date, we ensure that our area students experience the least amount of inconvenience and that the buslnesses in that area can reap the economic benefit of having top tier LHSAA football games played in Opelousas." the letter reads. "It will also allow us to showcase the Cities’ overall commitment to 'Tiger/Viking Pride' and excellence."

The plan called for the complete refurbishment of the stadium, with the field converted to artificial turf and enlarged, a state certified track, new bleachers and refurbishment of the locker rooms and restrooms.

"This decision reflects the City of Opelousas commitment to balancing progress with the well-being of our schools, our student athletes, our businesses, and our community," Alsandor said. "As we move forward, rest assured that the refurbishment of the Donald Gardner Stadium remains a top priority, and we are committed to ensuring that the process is executed efficiently and with the least disruption to all community stakeholders."

The plan was part of a total renovation of South City Park. The letter did not specify if the entire project would be delayed as well.
