Journalist Ben Jacobs has said that he expects Tottenham Hotspur to battle the likes of Real Madrid and Manchester United for Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite next summer.
Branthwaite has been one of the best centre-backs on show in the Premier League this season, with the 21-year-old’s impressive performances for Everton allegedly bringing him to the radar of several top sides.
Last week, Spurs Web relayed a report from The Daily Mail which claimed that Tottenham are big admirers of the Toffees academy graduate and are ready to battle Manchester United for the player’s services next summer.
However, Football Insider stated over the weekend that even though Spurs like Branthwaite, the club are unlikely to pursue him next summer.
The outlet explained that the youngster is expected to be quite expensive and Ange Postecoglou’s men do not want to spend the bulk of their transfer budget on a centre-back, now that they have Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin at their disposal.
This claim has been contradicted by Jacobs, who has now remarked that he expects the Lilywhites to battle the Red Devils and Los Blancos for the Everton star.
The journalist told GiveMeSport about Branthwaite’s future: “I think that there is going to be a bidding war, in many ways, during the summer. I think Tottenham will be there, and we know that Real Madrid have looked in the past as well.
“It is true that bringing in at least one young centre-back is on Manchester United’s positional radar. Homegrown players are also a key focus, so Branthwaite ticks a lot of boxes, especially with him being a left-sided centre-back.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It would make little sense for Tottenham to spend £60m-plus on another centre-back unless Postecoglou is planning to play three at the back next season, which appears extremely unlikely. The bulk of Spurs’ budget will likely be spent on a centre-forward, a winger and perhaps another midfielder.
