Report: Tottenham are now set to abandon their pursuit of Premier League star 

Football Insider have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are now set to abandon their pursuit of Jarrad Branthwaite as they do not want to spend big on a centre-back next summer.

Unsurprisingly, Branthwaite, who is having a breakthrough season at Goodison Park, is thought to be on the radar of several top sides, including Tottenham.

It was reported by The Daily Mail last week that Spurs and Manchester United are currently leading the race for the Toffees star.

The outlet explained that while Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Arsenal have also sought information about Branthwaite, the Lilywhites and the Red Devils have shown the most ‘concerted effort’ so far.

However, Football Insider have now revealed that Tottenham have concluded that they will not spend big money on a defender next summer.

The outlet explains that Spurs are expected to once again be one of the biggest spenders in the next transfer window, with one well-placed source quoted as saying that ‘funds won’t be an issue’ for Ange Postecoglou’s side.

It is explained that Branthwaite will cost ‘huge money’ and now that Spurs have Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Radu Dragusin in their ranks, they do not want to spend a significant portion of their budget on another centre-back.

If Tottenham do sign a centre-back next summer, it will likely be a young, up-and-coming starlet in the £20m-£30m range. That is unless Postecoglou decides that Ashley Phillips is ready to play a prominent first-team role next season.
