Ange Postecoglou says two Spurs stars are still ‘improving’ in his system

While discussing the absence of Destiny Udogie and Pedro Porro, Ange Postecoglou has said that the pair are still adapting to the demands of his system.

Both Porro and Udogie were signed to play as wing-backs in Antonio Conte’s system, and having exclusively hogged the touchline in their time at Sporting Lisbon and Udinese respectively, the pair have had to adapt to a completely new way of playing at Spurs this season.

With Postecoglou demanding his full-backs invert, the Spaniard and the Italian have needed to get used to receiving the ball in the middle of the park and sometimes even in between the opposition’s midfield and defensive lines.

The fact that both players have been able to adapt seamlessly to the roles shows the kind of quality the pair possess. Porro and Udogie were big misses for Tottenham against Wolves, with Emerson Royal and Ben Davies not being able to offer the same penetrative quality in possession.

Postecoglou has now hinted that we have not even seen the best of his two first-choice full-backs yet, insisting that they are both still improving.

When asked about Porro’s and Udogie’s unavailability, the Tottenham boss said ahead of the Wolves clash (via Football.London): “It doesn’t change the way we play but I think I’ve said in the past a player brings their own sort of unique ability to each position.

“The structure won’t change and the way we set up won’t change but different players bring different attributes. Pedro and Destiny have been outstanding for us this year.

“Pedro has pretty much played every game apart from the first one where he didn’t start. Destiny every time he has been out there for us has been really important. They’re both improving but as I said they’re missing now.”

What Ange says about Porro and Udogie is probably also true for many players in the Tottenham squad, who are still getting used to their roles in the system.

Postecoglou had always been honest about the fact that his sides often do not click into top gear until his second season in charge, which is why supporters need to be patient through this current spell.
