Manchester United: Council reveal 'masterplan' to transform Old Trafford Stadium - report

The much-discussed transformation of the Manchester United Old Trafford Stadium has taken a significant step forward, as Trafford Council revealed their ‘Trafford Wharfside master plan’. 

This ambitious proposal outlines a vision for the area surrounding the iconic stadium, which has been home to United for over a century, as they aim to create a ‘key emerging neighbourhood.’.

These plans were developed in collaboration with United and landowners Peel Group, hinting at a shared commitment to revitalising the area. 

The master plan is expected to pave the way for a future grand scheme, forming part of a vast regeneration project that could include a new 90,000-capacity stadium, which would delight the United supporters and boost revenue for the club.

While the council takes the lead, the initiative aligns perfectly with the ambitions of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS group, whose 25% stake in the club is due to be finalised next week. 

Their desire for rapid progress is evident in this latest development and offers United fans, who have longed for competence at boardroom level, hope of a massive turnaround in fortunes.

The Trafford Council master plan has been described as one with ‘nature and landscape at the heart of its vision’, stretching from Old Trafford to the Manchester Ship Canal. 

The ambitious project also aims to connect with the BBC HQ MediaCity across the water, while a consultation in the near future would open the door to public opinion regarding the strategy.

Key development sites have been grouped into different areas, with Old Trafford part of a ‘Stadium District’. Others include Trafford Wharf, Heritage Quarter, Innovation Quarter and Wharfside Heart.
