Quinta Brunson hopes Vince Staples was able to take 'good energy' to his own show after his role on 'Abbott Elementary'

After a season two role on "Abbott Elementary," Vince Staples' own show has premiered — and "Abbott" star and creator Quinta Brunson hopes he was able to pick up good vibes from her set to bring to his.

"The Vince Staples Show" is a Netflix limited series in which Staples plays a fictionalized version of himself, straddling the line between fame and obscurity. The rapper has a long musical career: He came up adjacent to the collective Odd Future and released his first studio album "Summertime '06" in 2015. In 2021, his self-titled LP made Business Insider's list of the best albums of the year.

Prior to launching his own series, which was delayed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, he had a recurring role on "Abbott Elementary" playing Maurice, one of Gregory's (Tyler James Williams) friends who briefly dates Brunson's character, Janine.

Brunson spoke with Business Insider ahead of the Super Bowl, where she starred in a TurboTax ad several days after the highly anticipated return of "Abbott Elementary" season three. The actor and writer said that Staples was working on both projects simultaneously.

"We had so many conversations about television and what makes it work, and him getting to see how the 'Abbott' set runs," Brunson told BI. "Vince is, I would say, now one of my closer friends. I love talking TV and comedy and music and everything with him, and he's so smart."

Brunson told BI that she hoped Staples was able to have a similar experience to one of her own. Prior to "Abbott," she had a recurring role on the TBS comedy series "Miracle Workers" that she said was formative. That experience informed how she wanted her own show to run, and she hopes that Staples was able to take over some "good energy" of his own.

"That show just was a wonderful environment, and I wanted 'Abbott' to feel just like that," she told BI. "And so I hope that Vince gets to take some good set energy over to his show."
