2024 SAG Awards: Film Actress lineup includes 2 former winners, 2 veteran nominees, 1 rookie
The women vying for the 2024 Best Film Actress SAG Award are Annette Bening (“Nyad”), Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Margot Robbie (“Barbie”), and Emma Stone (“Poor Things”). According to our odds, Gladstone (10/3) has the best chance of prevailing, followed in order by Stone (18/5), Robbie (9/2), Mulligan (9/2), and Bening (9/2).
Of these five nominees, only two – Gladstone and Robbie – are simultaneously in the running for Best Film Ensemble. The latter is now one of the few actresses with at least four nominations in that category, having previously shared in bids for “Bombshell” (2020), “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” (2020), and “Babylon” (2023). In those cases, she and her cast mates were beaten by the actors from “Parasite” and “Everything Everywhere All at Once.”
This is also Robbie’s fourth individual film acting nomination, following a lead bid for “I, Tonya” (2018) and supporting ones for “Mary Queen of Scots” (2019) and “Bombshell.” Mulligan’s own lead nomination total now stands at three, with her initial two having come for “An Education” (2010) and “Promising Young Woman” (2021).
In addition to being the only SAG Awards newcomer in this bunch, Gladstone has broken new ground as the first Indigenous nominee in any solo film category. In general, she was preceded by fellow Indigenous actress Tonantzin Carmelo, who received a Best TV Movie/Limited Actress notice for the TNT miniseries “Into the West” in 2006.
The two women currently seeking their second lead film wins are Bening (“American Beauty,” 2000) and Stone (“La La Land,” 2017), who would, at 65 and 35, respectively be the oldest and youngest dual champs in the category’s history. Bening, who was also nominated here for “Being Julia” (2005) and “The Kids Are All Right” (2011), would in fact be the second oldest recipient of this award overall, after Glenn Close (71, “The Wife,” 2019). As swimmer Diana Nyad, she would also be the first actress honored here for playing a living real person since Sandra Bullock (as Leigh Anne Tuohy in “The Blind Side”) in 2010.
Bening’s SAG Awards resume also includes an ensemble win for “American Beauty” and a bid in that category for “The Kids Are All Right,” while Stone’s features cast victories for both “The Help” (2012) and “Birdman” (2015). The latter film also brought Stone an individual supporting notice, as did “The Favourite” (2019).
This year’s Best Film Actress winner will be revealed during the 30th SAG Awards ceremony, streaming February 24 exclusively on Netflix.
