Oil stains can be ‘dissolved’ in 30 minutes using common household item – your driveway or garage could look good as new
OIL stains plaguing motor driveways can be removed in just “30 minutes” thanks to a common household item.
The new technique can help motorists who rely on their driveway for a parking spot but can’t stand the look of left-behind oil stains.
Experts at Terraform Driveways claim a product that “works the best” is laundry detergent – but only for recent new stains.
They state on their site: “This method works best on newer, smaller oil stains, so if you happen to be lucky enough to catch the spill as soon as it happens, this can be enough to stop the problem before it starts.
“Laundry detergent (including powder detergent) is a good option for removing oil stains because it contains surfactants and often a mild alkali.
“These are molecules that increase the ability of water and other substances to mix which makes it effective at dissolving dirt as well as oil.
“Remember that oil is hydrophobic so a surfactant can help to lift it even when it wouldn’t naturally.”
The method is fairly straightforward, if you’re using powdered detergent then it’s best to mix it with warm water into a “paste”, apply it to the stain and leave for thirty minutes.
They said: “Then scrub it with a stiff wire or nylon brush to remove any remaining residue.”
But the process is even easier for those with liquid detergent as you can apply it direct to the stain and go through the same process.
However, Brits were warned to remember that some cleaning products can damage plants and grass so it’s best to soak them in water before starting.
BEFORE STARTING
Those wanting to use the method should dispose of any paper towel or rags used to wipe the oil as it’s high flammable and can be dangerous if left laying around.
You should soak your grass and plants with water before starting as chemicals in cleaning detergent can be damaging to them.
And finally If your driveway is on a incline you should start from the top, as starting from the bottom can lead to oil washing back over an already cleaned area.
A second method is perfect for cat owners when battling tougher oil stains – as a sprinkle of cat litter can be effective at getting rid of larger oily eye-sores.
The process is a doddle, all you need to do is apply the cat litter to the stain and leave it for 30 minutes, before sweeping the litter off and giving the surface as a good clean.
Other methods mentioned are baking soda and oven cleaner, both include being applied to the stain and left for 30 minutes before scrubbing the area clean.
