Fabrizio Romano says Spurs would have to pay ‘big money’ to sign Serie A star 

Fabrizio Romano has said that Tottenham Hotspur are continuing to keep a close eye on Atalanta midfielder Ederson but revealed that the club have not made a decision yet on who their summer targets would be.

Ederson has come on leaps and bounds since his switch to Atalanta 18 months ago and the 24-year-old has turned a lot of his heads with his consistent displays this campaign, having established himself as a vital cog in Gian Piero Gasperini’s midfield.

The versatile Brazilian, who can play as a six, an eight or in a box-to-box role, has six goals to his name across all competitions this season and it was widely reported by various outlets through the January window that Ange Postecoglou’s men were considering a move for the player (Corriere Della Sera).

An offer from Spurs never came, with Ederson staying put at Bergamo, and it remains to be seen if the Lilywhites would reignite their interest in the midfielder at the end of the season.

Tottenham will have to spend big on Ederson

Romano has explained that Tottenham would have to spend big to sign the Atalanta star next summer as the Serie A side will not allow any of their key players to leave on the cheap.

When asked about Spurs’ pursuit of Ederson, the journalist told GiveMeSport: “I don’t see Atalanta selling their best players, so they will have to make some decisions or to sell for really big money.

“So we have to see what Tottenham will decide but for sure, they’re scouting the player, they’re following the player closely and he is a player they appreciate.

“So I will keep his name for the summer. But at the moment, there is not even a shortlist of players who are guaranteed targets for Tottenham. So I think around March, April, this will be more clear.”

While it is too early to speculate on which midfielder Tottenham will pursue next summer, there is no doubt in my mind that Postecoglou will want to add reinforcements to the middle of the park.

Even if Lucas Bergvall hits the ground running at the North London club, one would expect the Lilywhites to be in the market for a replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp, who both appear likely to leave at the end of the season.
