A man in Colombia created a very special memory for his beloved, staging a violent armed robbery in order to pop the question to his longtime girlfriend. Footage of the wild proposal has been circulated on Instagram, with many admiring the scale of the prank while also questioning why the young man thought this was a good idea.
The events unfolded in Cali, Colombia, a city that sees its share of armed robberies and organized crime. Video shows a group of men on motorbikes descending upon a small car as it pulls up to a stop sign. The faux assailants order the occupants to get out of the vehicle, leading the man and the woman into the middle of the street.
As the “robbers” kneel the man down on one knee, they suddenly go quiet as he pulls a ring from his pocket. Once his girlfriend realizes what’s actually going on, she runs towards her boyfriend and slaps him good-naturedly. He eventually slides the ring on her finger and the two kiss and the crowd of “criminals” cheer.
Many in the comments accused the man who organized the prank of “making apologies” for violent crime. “How sad it is to have violence and insecurity so normalized,” commented @lau.garcia.o.
“Guess who wouldn't have gotten married right then and there,” wrote @suanysilvana.
“It may be an apology for crime but remember that that man already stole the lady's ❤️,” wrote @piedacarmago. “Tremendous scare but for her his proposal will be unforgettable.”
While it may seem like a tremendously uncommon way to propose, the unidentified Colombian man isn’t the first to stage a robbery to pop the question. A man in New York orchestrated a terrifying faux robbery in 2019 to propose to his girlfriend, who gleefully accepted despite begging a supposed gunman for her life seconds earlier. In 2018, a man faked his arrest by Spanish police as part of an intricate proposal ploy.
