Kansas AG Kris Kobach calls for border security in challenge to Biden Administration

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Kansas Attorney General Kris Kobach is joining other states in condemnation of President Joe Biden's handling of the border situation in Texas.

On Tuesday, Jan. 30 Kobach released a letter to the Biden Administration penned by attorneys general from 26 other states showing their support for Texas' ongoing border issues with Mexico. Kobach's signature joins the other attorneys general in a scathing review of the "unprecedented border crisis."

"If President Biden wants to stop the border crisis, he can start right now, today, by enforcing existing immigration laws, by reinstating the remain-in-Mexico policy that is required by federal law and by building the wall," Kobach said. "Instead, Biden has taken an America-last position - allowing illegal aliens, illicit drugs, and human traffickers to pour into the country. We support Texas's efforts to protect its citizens and all Americans from this invasion."

The letter alleges that the Biden Administration bears responsibility for more than six million immigrants who have crossed the southern border. This number is around double the population of Kansas and more than the population of several states in the U.S., according to the 2020-2023 U.S. Census Bureau report.

Kobach said the current coalition of attorneys general is in support of Texas and demands the Biden Administration enforce the laws that secure the border or allow states like Texas to stop crossings. Other states that signed on to the letter include: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia and Wyoming.

On Jan. 25, multiple Republican state governors vowed to aid Texas in its border struggles after Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a letter challenging a Supreme Court decision on the addition of razor wire to the border. Texas had earlier seized a riverfront park and installed razor wire to prevent people from Mexico from crossing illegally, a move that quickly set Texas against the federal officials and the Biden Administration in enforcement of the border.

Some states have sent resources and National Guard units to help Texas enforce border security. KSNT 27 News has reached out to Kansas Governor Laura Kelly with questions on the ongoing border situation to learn if the Sunflower State will be deploying its own National Guard to Texas. The Office of the Governor has yet to respond to this inquiry as of Jan. 30.
