Sandsend is home to its very own microclimate – a set of unique weather conditions that differ from the surrounding areas.
According to Yorkshire Live, Sandsend has a maritime climate, also known as an oceanic climate, which means it is more likely to have milder seasons.
The seaside village will generally have warmer weather compared to other parts of Yorkshire, making it popular with beachgoers.
Sandsend was originally split into two even smaller fishing villages, Sandsend and East Row.
After several cottages were built to house local workers, the villages became one.
Now, the seaside village is a popular beach spot among UK holidaymakers thanks to its slightly warmer climate.
One of its biggest draws is Sandsend Beach – a sand and shingle beach that stretches for three miles.
When the tide is low, beachgoers will be able to build sandcastles and search for fossils in the rock pools.
On a clear day, holidaymakers will be able to spot Whitby Pier and Whitby Abbey across the bay.
In the summer part of the beach is cordoned off for swimming.
There are no lifeguards on the beach, and dogs are restricted to certain areas from May 1 until September 30.
The Yorkshire beach is also home to a seafront pub called The Hart Inn, which serves a range of traditional pub grub, including steak, scallops and seafood linguine.
While the pub is currently closed for maintenance, it is set to reopen on February 5, 2024.
Other facilities at the beach include a cafe.
There are plenty of other activities in Sandsend, including the Sandsend Trail – a popular walking route in the area.
Sandsend Beach has received praise from visitors too, with nearly 900 five-star reviews on TripAdvisor.
One person wrote: “Incredible place, absolutely loved it, gorgeous beach, beautiful scenery. Highly recommend the area over Whitby.”
Another added: “A delightful long sandy beach that stretches for a mile or more down towards Whitby and is really extensive when the tide’s out.”
Mulgrave Castle is another popular attraction.
While the castle isn’t open to the public, visitors can access the woodland that sits around the ruins.
The woodland area is just a six-minute walk from the Yorkshire coast, with most walkers passing other attractions like St Oswald’s Church.
Accommodation options in the village are limited, but Sun Online Travel have found an overnight stay at The Woodlands, a local B&B, for £82.50 per night, based on two people sharing a room.
Sandsend Train Station closed down in 1958, but the village is an eight-minute drive from Whitby and a 45-minute drive from Middlesbrough.
North Yorkshire is home to some of the country’s most impressive scenery, including the North York Moors National Park.
One attraction in the national park is the North York Moors Railway – a heritage railway.
In the February half-term, families will be able to board the No. 70000 Britannia locomotive.
While the iconic train will normally be seen hauling goods along the train line, families will be set to board the iconic locomotive to go on a more leisurely journey.
The services will be operated by North Yorkshire Moors Railway, with two daily trains running between February 10 to February 18, 2024.
Other attractions in the North York Moors include the Thornton le Dale Motor Museum and the Old Coastguard Station.
There are plenty of other attractions along the Yorkshire Coast, including Robin Hood’s Bay – a fishing village located six miles south of Whitby.
