I'm not sure how AG missed it but there were a couple pretty obvious errors during the game. AG will kick himself in the film room.
1. 3:00 left in the second half was noteworthy. Why? Because that was the very first time we cleared out a side and had Holmes take Quinn off the dribble. The formula is clear and obvious: play someone big and strong against Holmes, then Holmes takes him off the dribble and it's a total foul-fest. Play someone smaller and force a double, and it's time to rain down 3's. AG: what were you waiting for??
2. AG brought Petras, who is 6'8" and WAS 215 before mono, off the bench to guard Quinn?? OK, I thought, he's trying to go small and bring another 3 point shooter into the game -- and then AG promptly screamed at him for taking a wide open 3. So apparently you brought him in for DEFENSE? Petras is a bad defender when he's not sickly and out-gunned. Jack would have been a better choice IMO.
Those 2 choices I thought were poor, with #1 being the more important of the 2.
3. Having said that, late in the second half Richmond changed their defense and started switching every ball screen. Kudos to the team and to AG for quickly taking a heavy offensive advantage. We got many easy shots by attacking that strategy. So well done there.
4. It was disappointing that the official refs missed their flight and didn't arrive until the second half. The high school refs who called the first half completely differently than the second half were not ready for big time basketball. We lost a half of rugby and won (tied via FT's to stop the clock) a half of basketball.
5. There's only so much AG can do about guys taking pi$$-poor shots. That was F-minus quality shot selection for much of that game.
6. Among those ranking high on the poor shot selection scale was Bennett, who once again took many bad shots and also took many good shots. Inside of 30 feet (exaggerating) he was 2-4 from 3, and 6-10 overall. Just cut out the Steph Curry act, would you please??
We had a spectacularly poor game against a good opponent on their home court, with an assist to the refs, and lost by a couple. Holmes will learn in the film room, AG will learn in the film room.
Life goes on.
