I live in a council house but you could never tell thanks to my DIY skills – people say it’s too ‘beautiful’ to be one
A COUNCIL tenant who has completed some stunning DIY projects has been told her home “looks too beautiful” to be social housing.
Sharon, who has lived in the property for over 17 years, shared the projects in her council house that she’ll “never regret”.
The DIY whizz is on a mission to empower other women to get handy with tools and paint, so that they can curate their dream homes too.
Taking to TikTok, the Wales-based content creator gushed over the runner on her stairs, her black bannisters and green panelling in the “box room”.
She said reminiscing on the projects was making her “fall in love with her house all over again”.
Sharon has also added dangling plug-in lights above her bed and adorned her living room walls with wood-effect wallpaper.
Outside, she has built a summerhouse, installed a 6ft privacy fence and laid down porcelain slabs.
“This gives new build vibes, it’s so beautiful,” one viewer commented. “Wouldn’t even know it was council.”
Another joked that they’d love to be Sharon’s housing officer.
Her eye for interior design has seen her tot up over 80,000 followers on TikTok, where she posts under @abitofme123.
Sharon has advocated for the provision of social housing on her profile, at times biting back at trolls that vilify council tenants.
In response to one calling her “disgraceful”, she said: “I dreamt of the fancy career, job and big house as a child.
“Unfortunately, it didn’t happen for me – and that’s okay.
“I’m in a good place.
“I work as hard as the next person.
“I will not be silenced.
“I stand for council tenants”.
More than one million people are waiting for social homes in the UK.
However, each council has its own local rules about who qualifies to go on the housing register in its area.
A council house is given to prospective tenants through a points system.
The council will contact you about any available property once you are high enough on the waiting list.
