How much of the sun will be covered in your city during April's solar eclipse?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — While millions of Texans will be able to see a total solar eclipse from their own backyards this April, many more will still get a spectacular show despite not being in the path of totality.

Austin, Waco, Dallas, Fort Worth and Tyler are all within the path of totality, meaning 100% of sunlight will be blocked as the moon passes between the Earth and the sun.

San Antonio is just outside the area of totality, but 99.99% of the sun will be blocked out. Houston will see 94.41% coverage, while Lubbock will see 89.96%. Brownsville is right behind at 89.94%, while El Paso will have 84.61% coverage.

All of Texas will see at least 80% coverage, with the community of Texas, in the far northwest corner of the Panhandle, seeing the lowest coverage, at 81.86%.

The small community of Radar Base, just north of Eagle Pass in Maverick County, will experience the longest totality in Texas: 4 minutes and 26.8 seconds of darkness.

If that’s too far to travel, a total of 176 communities will have totality lasting at least 4 minutes and 20 seconds, including more populated cities such as Fredericksburg, Burnet, Copperas Cove, Gatesville, Hillsboro, Ennis, Kaufman and Sulphur Springs.

The next total eclipse visible in the U.S. won’t be for another 20 years. The eclipse on August 23, 2044, will only be visible in Montana and the Dakotas.
