Former President Donald Trump renewed questions about his mental fitness over the weekend by mixing up Nikki Haley and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in a speech, and one of his former White House staffers said that's not the first time he's made a similar mistake.
The former president repeatedly confused Haley with Pelosi, whom he was trying to blame for security failures on Jan. 6, and former White House Deputy Press Secretary Sarah Matthews told CNN that she's seen evidence of his mental decline.
"Honestly, the thing is this is not a unique circumstance," Matthews said. "This isn't a first time that Trump has kind of seemed confused on the campaign trail and had a gaffe like this. He said something before recently about him running against [Barack] Obama, and obviously, that never happened. So this is not unique, it is a little bit concerning."

"I do think that Haley was right to call this out," Matthews added. "I kind of wish that she had brought up these attacks sooner questioning Trump's mental acuity, because this is something we have seen her and other Republicans like Trump go after [President Joe] Biden for, but obviously Trump is not that much younger than Biden – he's definitely no spring chicken. I think it's fair to question his mental acuity when you have these kinds of moments like this when he definitely seemed confused."
