Dancing On Ice star battling secret heartbreak and backstage tears just hours before show debut
A DANCING On Ice pro skater has been dealing with a secret heartache after his dad suffered a devastating stroke.
Colin Grafton was left in tears just hours before he headed onto the rink with his celebrity partner Claire Sweeney after a very emotional call with his family on Sunday evening.
Colin’s father, Roy, had the unexpected stroke on Wednesday January 10th – leaving his family, who live in Boston – completely shocked.
The family were unsure if he would be able to walk or talk again after he underwent two surgeries on the brain to repair a vessel in his brain, which had collapsed.
A source close to Colin said: “At first, Colin wanted to get on a flight right away and be there for his family.
“But he knew his dad would want him to do the show, and Claire has incredibly supportive to him – she has been his rock.”
A TV insider said: “On the night of the first show of Dancing on Ice, Colin’s mum called him and to his surprise his dad was able to construct a few words and communicate to Claire and Colin to have a good show, saying “go get it”.
“This was very emotional for Claire and Colin before the show, bringing tears to all, and the wardrobe who was getting them in the dressing room. It was just moments before the first live show, which thankfully they were not competing in.”
Colin and soap star Claire are due to perform their first routine this weekend.
Colin’s dad is said to be defying doctor’s beliefs and is doing better each day, learning to regain his speech and mobility.
Speaking exclusively to The Sun at the Cirque Du Soleil premier of Algeria – In A New Light at the Royal Albert Hall on Wednesday evening, Colin said: “ITV, Claire, and the other Professional skaters have been incredible in their support, and I am so thankful to be surrounded by wonderful people.”
The day after his dad’s stroke, Colin shared a picture of his father and wrote: “Love you Dad! You’re a fighter. Xo”
