If Mohammed Shami’s incredible exploits weren’t enough, his brother Mohammed Kaif is illuminating the cricket scene. On day two of their Ranji Trophy Group B encounter in Kanpur on Saturday, after bowling a spellbinding 4 for 14, Kaif came out with the bat at number nine and an unbeaten 45 to help Bengal take the lead over his home club Uttar Pradesh by 128 runs in the first innings. It’s important to remember that Kaif is playing First-Class for the first time.
Shami had praised his brother earlier this month for representing Bengal in the Ranji Trophy.
“Finally after a long struggle, you got Ranji trophy cap for Bengal. Cheers!! Great Achievement !! Congratulations, I wish you a great future ahead! Give your 100% and Keep continuing hard work & do well,” Shami had written on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Speaking of the Bengal vs. Uttar Pradesh Ranji Trophy match, under difficult circumstances at the Green Park, Kaif’s team collapsed for 188 after starting at 95 for 5, with seasoned Indian seamer Bhuvneshwar Kumar recording outstanding figures of 8 for 41.
After being eliminated for 60 in the first innings, Uttar Pradesh showed resiliency in the second essay, finishing the day with 46 for no loss.
UP was down by 82 runs as Samarth Singh and Aryan Juyal both stayed undefeated at 21 and 20, respectively.
Day 3 of the match could be exciting as the host team tries to close the gap and establish control, while the Bengal bowlers will be keen to take the early lead.
Bengal earlier on Saturday morning lost three wickets at a cost of fifteen runs. However, Kaif led the way, finishing first with 45 not out from 79 balls.
Bengal reached a competitive total as tailenders Kaif and Suraj Sindhu Jaiswal (20) scored the crucial 52 runs for the ninth wicket.
Kaif hit two sixes and four boundaries.
Following Suraj’s removal, Kaif and Ishan Porel (10) combined to add another crucial 26 runs for the last wicket, lifting the hosts to a manageable total.
