‘One of the biggest losses’ commiserate shoppers as much-loved jewellers closing in weeks after 120 years
A MUCH-loved jewellery shop has left customers devastated after announcing its closure in a matter of weeks.
The popular Gus Jones Jewellers in Bargoed, Wales, will be taking its final orders at the “beginning” of March.
Based on Hanbury Road, the shop will close after 120 years of service as a result of “rising costs” and “falling footfall”.
The closure was described as a “very difficult” and “emotional decision” by the shop in a public post on its Facebook Page.
They also wrote: “Thank you to all our customers over the past 120 years and to all our employees who have worked in Bargoed, we have really valued being part of the community.”
Loyal shoppers were saddened by the news of another local business disappearing from their high street, with one person describing it as “one of the biggest losses”.
A second person said: “Gutting! Just bought my wedding ring from there, they went above and beyond to get it early for me.”
A third added: “This is so sad.. such a shame.”
One devastated customer even called for incentives to be put in place to “entice more footfall” and “soften the blow of rising costs for businesses” in Bargoed.
Stockists of leading brands of giftware and jewellery, Gus Jones also offers watch and jewellery repairs as well as jewellery valuations and insurance services.
Gus Jones operates across south Wales, with branches also open in Abergavenny, Blackwood and Ebbw Vale.
Once the shop in Bargoed closes, the next closest store for customers will be in Blackwood – less than a 10 minute drive away.
Last month, shoppers cried it’s the “end of an era” as a much-loved jewellers closed forever after 188 years.
The family-run business pulled down its shutters for the final time just days before Christmas.
Just weeks before, a family jeweller which was open for more than 40 years in Warwick town centre also closed – leaving locals saddened.
The Andersons of Warwick Jewellers held a closing down sale on November 25, before it officially closed.
