Social media is a pivotal piece of the music-marketing playbook in 2024.
Apps like TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram can help songs get discovered and allow up-and-coming artists to find new fans. Established artists and legacy tracks can also reemerge into the mainstream if they end up going viral on social media.
Much of this happens organically, as users independently opt to add songs to videos or share them with friends. But marketers also go to great lengths to seed tracks to users, either by hiring influencers, enlisting remix artists to make slowed-down or sped-up versions of tracks, or working directly with the major social platforms on marketing promotions.
The connections between social media and the music industry have become deeply entwined as artists host virtual concerts on platforms like Roblox and apps like TikTok throw live concerts that blend digital and in-person musical experiences.
Business Insider has reported on the myriad ways that social media and music are now connected. We've highlighted music executives at platforms like Snapchat and Meta, as well as power players who were early to harness the power of TikTok as a promotional tool.
