Matt Eberflus felt Luke Getsy was a strong choice for Chicago Bears offensive coordinator because of his background in the wide-zone system and his strong reputation among peers. It was a gamble, but the head coach felt it’d be worth it. Sadly, as is often the case with this team, the gamble failed. After two seasons, Getsy failed to elevate the offense to where it needed to be. As a result, reports have surfaced that the Bears have fired the coordinator after two seasons. Quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko will join him.
Nobody will be surprised by this. Among the issues with the Bears this past season, many felt it was the offense not pulling its weight. While they still ran the ball well enough, the continued ineptitude of their passing game led to building frustration in the locker room. D.J. Moore called Getsy “fine” after the loss to Green Bay in the season finale. Not exactly a ringing endorsement. Jaylon Johnson piled on a day later when he stated Justin Fields “is not the problem.”
The writing was on the wall.
The perception among many potential candidates is that Eberflus will be a lame-duck coach. If he has another losing season in 2024, there is a chance he and the staff will be fired. That means they’d be signing up for one year of work before once again being unemployed. Not ideal. This means the Bears must work hard to offer assurances that won’t be the case. They are committed to Eberflus, especially as it appears they have plans to make a big change at quarterback with the #1 overall pick.
It is a reasonable assumption the man who replaced Luke Getsy will be someone with play calling experience. There could be a number of options out there. Eric Bieniemy, Kellen Moore, Greg Roman, and Darrell Bevell seem like possibilities. Perhaps they delve into the college ranks for help. The possibilities are extensive. Whether they can land any of them is the bigger question. One thing is certain. Getsy’s exit makes it all but certain that a quarterback change is coming.
