This morning, the Earth shaking in the Chicago area was not an earthquake. Just a few minutes ago, NFL reporters Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero reported the long-awaited news that Luke Getsy was fired. According to the report, QB coach Andrew Janocko and WR coach Tyke Tolbert were also terminated.
According to several sources, Matt Eberflus is being retained, at least for the 2024 season.
The thought of bringing Getsy in to work with Fileds was looked upon favorably when he was hired in 2022, but we quickly learned he wasn’t the answer. His failure to work with his quarterback’s skillset and try to keep him locked in as a pocket passer failed. Fields proved time and again he is best with a moving pocket.
Getsy’s game plans and bizarre personnel groupings left fans scratching their heads. His play-calling outside of the beginning play scripts was ineffective.
What’s Next?
As you, the readers, know, this column does not speculate and write about false rumors. But looking at what is the next move is important. The next coordinator may be asked to fix Fields. Another option is trading the former first-round choice and taking a shot on one of the top QBs available in this year’s draft. That will certainly be the most important question to ask the candidates Rayn Poles and Matt Eberflus choose to interview for their next coordinator.
Do Or Die Season For Matt Eberflus
Matt Eberflus made a mistake in hiring Luke Getsy. He can’t miss on a second OC. If the offense fails to leave the gait from game one, Eberflus’s tenure as Chicago’s head coach will end after the 2024 season ends.
