The Athletic have revealed that Tottenham Hotspur signed Timo Werner swiftly since the club were determined to give Ange Postecoglou what he wants and were also wary of competition from Premier League sides for the former Chelsea man.
Spurs officially announced their capture of Werner yesterday, and according to the report, the speed of the deal has surprised many insiders at Hotspur Way, given that transfers tend to go down to the wire in January.
The Athletic say that Postecoglou had privately demanded that the club show urgency this window and they explain that there was a desire to give the Australian head coach what he wants.
As a result, the club’s technical director, Johan Lange, did plenty of work to line up targets even before the window opened.
The report reveals that while Tottenham’s former managing director of football, Fabio Paratici, who still works as a consultant for the North London side, has been active in the club’s other transfer pursuits, that was not the case with the Werner deal, with Lange leading the way.
Finally, the publication adds that another reason that Spurs were swift in agreeing a deal was because other clubs, including Manchester United, were also sniffing around the 27-year-old.

The fact that RB Leipzig were willing to loan out Werner with an option to buy made this a relatively easy deal for Tottenham to complete. I doubt the deal would have been as straightforward if the German club were insisting on a permanent sale or obligation to buy.
