Greene says she'll vote against Speaker Johnson's $1.6 trillion funding deal

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) said Monday that she will vote against any bill that results from the $1.6 trillion top-line funding agreement reached Sunday.

Greene said the effort, led by Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), doesn’t include enough funding for GOP priorities.

“I am a NO to the Johnson Schumer budget deal,” she wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “This $1.6 Trillion dollar budget agreement does nothing to secure the border, stop the invasion, or stop the weaponized government targeting Biden’s political enemies and innocent Americans.” 

“So much for the power of the purse!” she added.

Congress faces a Jan. 19 deadline to pass legislation to prevent a partial government shutdown. The Pentagon and several other departments have funding through Feb. 2.

Much of the deal on top-line figures is taken from last year’s debt ceiling agreement, which saw then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) compromise on spending cuts with President Biden and congressional Democrats.

That agreement resulted in a revolt among the most conservative Republicans in the House and ultimately saw McCarthy get removed from the Speakership. Greene, a key ally of McCarthy's at the time, supported that deal.

Multiple GOP lawmakers have already threatened to vote against any agreement that does not include significant spending on border security.

Johnson addressed those concerns Sunday, saying the deal includes “key modifications” to last year’s debt ceiling agreement and would reduce spending by a total of $30 billion from the original Senate proposal.

Biden issued a statement giving his stamp of approval to the spending framework.

“It reflects the funding levels that I negotiated with both parties and signed into law last spring. It rejects deep cuts to programs hardworking families count on, and provides a path to passing full-year funding bills that deliver for the American people and are free of any extreme policies,” Biden said.
