Parts of the Northern Line will close this year – here’s where and when

A section of the Northern Line will be shut on at least 16 different days in 2024.

London Underground passengers will face major disruption with full closures planned at multiple stations for more than a week in April.

Further weekend closures are also earmarked for three weekends in June.

Tube lines will be shut north of Golders Green to allow for a major redevelopment of Colindale station.

The 1960s-era station will be replaced with a new ‘landmark’ building, according to Transport for London (TfL).

It will include a ticket hall and a lift to deliver step-free access for the first time, with work expected to start this year.

When and where are the Northern Line closures in 2024?

TfL confirmed the Northern Line will be shut between Golders Green and Edgware on the following dates:

  • April 2 to April 11
  • June 15 to June 16
  • June 22 to June 23
  • June 29 to June 30

It means all six of these stations will not be open or operating services: Golders Green, Brent Cross, Hendon Central, Colindale, Burnt Oak and Edgware.

‘This closure is needed so that work can be done when trains aren’t running,’ TfL said.

The government body also said additional Northern Line closures are planned for summer and autumn of 2024, but the ‘precise dates for this have not yet been set’.

Regeneration works are part of £43.1million in funding pledged by the government to upgrade both Colindale and Leyton Tube stations.

A spokesman said: ‘It means that TfL can now go ahead with letting the construction contract before the end of this year for the rebuilding of Colindale station which, in its current state, was projected to reach passenger capacity by 2026.

‘Leyton station will also get a new ticket hall built adjacent to the existing one, two new staircases and two lifts making the station fully accessible for the first time and ensuring it has capacity to support future passenger demand.

‘The construction contract is expected to be awarded in summer 2024.’

In the more immediate future, getting into work is going to be a bit tricky next week with Tube workers going on strike from January 5-12.

It comes as part of a number of walkouts and strike action by key workers across the country this month.
